Komorebi

A solo exhibition by Marinka Reuten

Gallery van Fanny Freytag is honoured to announce Komorebi, the first major solo exhibition by Marinka Reuten at a gallery. Reuten presents a series of new paintings, which will be on view from September 18 to October 10.

By layering monochromatic acrylic washes on the canvas, abstract qualities emerge and a great depth of colour is created. The shifting interplay of light, colour, and intensity forms the foundation of Komorebi, a Japanese word describing the feeling created by sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees.

The sense of movement and the emotions light evokes are central to Marinka Reuten’s work. A recurring motif in her paintings is the feeling that everything slips by effortlessly: light that disappears, memories that fade, voices that are forgotten. In her work, this impermanence does not lead to melancholy, but rather to the reassuring realisation that we are all connected to one another through the ever-flowing current of time.

We are pleased to invite you to the celebratory opening on September 18 from 17:00–20:00 at Gallery van Fanny Freytag.

Nowhere. Now here #7 & #8, diptych, 2026. Acrylic on canvas, 100x60 cm.

Marinka Reuten

Marinka Reuten (Netherlands), a former graphic designer, shifted her focus entirely to autonomous art in 2022. Her paintings explore themes of time, impermanence and resilience through minimalist surfaces. Her work invites viewers to pause and reflect on life's transience, urging them to slow down, pay attention, and uncover the essence of each moment—whether through a broader view of time or a closer focus on its smallest details.
